ArtAsiaPacific recently sat down with Japanese artist Tomoo Gokita on the occasion of his solo show at Hong Kong’s McNamara Art Projects, “Hotel Paraiso,” organized by Taka Ishii Gallery. Inspired by the landscape of Mexico, the colorful music of Harry Hosono and the Yellow Magic Orchestra, he describes the fictional narratives in his new black-and-white paintings, which express a sense of statelessness in their snapshots of private, interior lives.
