Yogyakarta-based artist Eko Nugroho works in a diverse range of media, including paintings, embroidery, sculpture, site-specific murals, shadow puppets and video projections. Inspired by Indonesia’s politically charged environment and artistic history, Nugroho creates surreal characters that fuse humans, machines, animals and plants, in his darkly humorous images and installations.
ArtAsiaPacific met with Eko Nugroho, at Lombard-Freid Projects in New York, where he recently had his solo exhibition, “Snobs Behind Ketchup.” Nugroho discusses the meaning behind his exhibition title, the Daging Tumbuh Comic Collective, which he founded in 2000, and its collaborative projects with the local Indonesian community.
